We are Saints, Not Sinners

We are Saints, Not Sinners

Aug 16, 2026

Passage:The Letter of Paul to the Romans Romans 8:1-16

Pastor: Scott Eng

Series: Who We Are Instead

Category: New Testament

Keywords: jesus, god, salvation, who we are, law of sin and death, law of the spirit, saints and sinners, living in fear, living in freedom

Summary:

We are saints, not sinners. "saints"- consecrated ones, holy, called. “The narrative of “I am an awful sinner” must be replaced by the narrative that says, “In Christ I am no longer defined by sin. I have been reconciled. Sin has been defeated.”” (James Bryan Smith, The Good And Beautiful God). "the law of sin and death” = the principle that our behavior is the way to life (but since we can’t following the law perfectly, it ends up leading to death) “the law of the Spirit” = the principle that life is not earned, but given freely through Jesus’ death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins. The old problem: We keep trying to save ourselves, We try to avoid sin so God doesn't punish us, We try to do good out of obligation. The mindset of sin leads to living in fear. Being a Saint means assurance and peace instead of fear and anxiety. We often treat each other the old way. In Christ, we see others with new eyes.
