During this process, some of us may be thinking "wow, I feel like this new work in New Brunswick is exciting and may be for me." If you're in that boat, awesome! Here are some characteristics to strive for if you're looking to be a part of the team:
1. A strong servant's heart and mind. Simply put, starting a new site will require a total surrender to the work at hand. There will be tasks galore that will simply need to be done, for Jesus' sake. While we will need key expertise in particular areas (we'll share what those are in another post), there will be a need for everyone to be ready to joyfully engage in any and every need presented.
2. Initiative and ability to make new friends. The foundational reason we are starting a new site is to "help skeptics become world changers," as our mission statement says. Central to that is relationships with people. Every new site member should anticipate having to meet new people and make new relationships daily. In the first few months, we mean this literally: can you meet at least 7 new friends a week, meaning in the first two months you will meet at least 60 new friends (obviously developing deeper friendships with a few number of them)?
3. Initiative and ability to share Jesus. Skeptics become world changers when people meet Jesus. And people meet Jesus only as we talk about Him and join people in their journey with Him. You may not currently feel like you're that great with sharing Jesus- no worries, it's something we can work on now!
4. Ability to both get an income and volunteer. We'll need team members to find employment in the new site and serve as well. As we said, it's not going to be easy. But it will be perhaps one of the most fulfilling things we could do, starting a new spiritual community in a place where people are searching. To be as clear as possible, expect to work a full time job, tithe to the new work, and give about 15 hours of service each week.
5. Ability to live in a physical, strategic region within New Brunswick, Highland Park, or Piscataway. One of the key characteristics and values of Ethnos is that we live in the physical location of the church community. We believe this is an essential piece of knowing, loving, and identifying with the city. Thankfully, housing is cheaper in New Brunswick when compared to University City! But there will be challenges as well, as certain parts of New Brunswick have crime rates far above the national average. We will need to be prayerfully obedient to where God wants us to live.
6. Ability to be a part of, and commit to, a team. We're looking for people who not only get along with others, but who know how to love, disagree with, forgive, play with, invest in, commit to, and defend each other through the challenges of starting a new site. Expect the team development to begin as early as this December!
If you've read this far and you're interested, then: a) spend a moment asking Jesus if this is for you, and b) contact . We're hoping to assemble an initial team by December 1, 2014.
Prayer Points:
1. For God to call His perfect team together, and for this team to be sensitive and obedient to that call.
2. For God to grow this team in such a way that they will have each of the characteristics above in a full and powerful way.
